Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has decided not to take a vote of confidence from the parliament. He said that no vote of confidence would be taken in the cabinet meeting held on Thursday and the government would move ahead as per Article 76 (5) of the Constitution.

There is a constitutional provision that Oli, who became the Prime Minister in accordance with Article 76 (3) of the Constitution, must give a vote of confidence within a month after the opposition alliance was not claimed for a majority government. Earlier, Oli had said that he would take a vote of confidence before the budget speech.

According to government spokesperson Parbat Gurung, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Oli has decided to pave the way as there is no basis for the government to get a vote of confidence.

“As there is no basis to get a vote of confidence from the current structure of the parliament, there is talk of paving the way for the formation of a government in accordance with Article 76 (5),” Gurung said.

Similarly, the government has also recommended to the President to convene the kharif session of the parliament on May 25.
